season as head baseball coach at McCook Community College. Olsen enters his fourteenth year overall as a junior college head coach., Olsen was the first head coach in MCC history in 2002 then had a five year stint at Independence Community College in Independence KS before returning in the summer of 2007 to take over the Indian program again. Coach Olsen, a McCook native graduated from McCook Senior high school in 1995, following graduation he played two years of junior college baseball in Kansas. After graduating with his A.A. from Colby Olsen transferred to Wheaton College in Wheaton IL, where he completed his baseball eligibility and graduated in the fall of 1999 with a B.S. in Kinesiology. Olsen stayed on in the spring of 2000 as an assistant coach at Wheaton, then in 2000-2001 Coach Olsen went back to Colby and spent one year as an assistant there. Olsen also spent six seasons as the head coach in the McCook American Legion Baseball program in the summers from 1997 to 2002. Olsen completed his Masters degree in Health PE and Recreation from Emporia State University. Coach Olsen was hired in the spring of 2001 to start the baseball program at McCook Community College. After one season as the Indians head coach, Olsen was hired to take over the head coaching position at Independence Community College in Independence KS. At Independence Olsen built the Pirates into a program that consistently competed for a top spot in the highly competitive Jayhawk East. In his first season as Pirates head coach Olsen lead the Pirates to their first winning season in school history and was named the 2003 Jayhawk East coach of the year. Olsen’s final two recruiting classes in Kansas produced three Major League Baseball draft picks, in 2007 Josh Beal was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, in 2008 Jon Nagel to the Chicago Cubs, and in 2009 Justin Beal went to the Philadelphia Phillies. In July of 2007 Coach Olsen happily accepted the head coaching position at McCook Community College. In 2010 Olsen guided the Indians to their best season in school history, which included setting the school record for wins, and the Indians first trip to the Region playoff under the new format. Olsen is excited for his eighth year at MCC, and hopes the Indians can make a push towards McCook’s first region IX title. Olsen has been very pleased with the 2015 team on and off the field, “this years group has had great work ethic at practice, in the weight room and in the classroom” We had an excellent team GPA this past fall, and placed 8 players on the MPCC Dean and President List.” Olsen also is a full time Health and PE instructor and athletic director at MCC. Olsen and his wife Nicole reside in McCook. Kuhlen's score for "taste" broke the tie, earning him -- and his dumplings -- the top trophy. In third place was Donna Hall and Jim and Joyce Jones of Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel. GiGi and Dan Sattler won the "People's Choice" trophy. Chilis were judged on color, aroma, consistency, taste and aftertaste. Dick Driml started the chili cook-off as a fund-raiser for his MCC band department. His memory is kept alive by family, friends and the booster club who have sponsored the annual cook-off since his death in June 1999. Kollin's grandmother -- Janet Werkmeister, representing the MCC Foundation -- won first place in the contest, followed by John Zlomke of the McCook Lions Club in second place and Adam Siegfried of Loop Brewery/The Coppermill in third place. Shirley Driml Perez, representing the Driml family, won the "People's Choice" award. The judges were Monica Conroy, Mike Broomfield and Joe Townsley; and MCC students/softball players Samantha Ojeda, Tiffany Dempsey and Rachel Bashor. Proceeds from the chili cook-off, coordinated by the MCC Indian Boosters, go to the MCC Music Department, of which Dick Driml was the band instructor until his death in June 1999.
